Length of ban: 1 day
Ban reason: self antag
Ban issue: I did what I was banned/noted for, but the ban is unreasonably harsh.
Events leading to the ban
I was playing salvager with one other salvage member. We killed a mutant in space and wanted to have the cobra gland implanted by the surgeon.
When we arrived at Medbay, the surgeon repeatedly delayed the procedure and gave us excuses as to why it could not be performed. This went on for an extended period while I was left bleeding on the operating table. Eventually, I became suspicious and asked for my belongings back so I could leave.
I then noticed that my cobra gland was missing. I confronted the surgeon about it, and he denied having taken it and claimed that someone else must have stolen it.
My friend and I left Medbay frustrated. We had spent a significant portion of the shift dealing with this and had lost the item we had worked for. My friend suggested that Sec was not going to be able to help us due to the nature of the crime, and that we would have to deal with it ourselves. We armed ourselves, and he suggested we remove our IDs while we go looking for the surgeon.
We eventually found the same surgeon again, glistening from the partial invisibility of the cobra gland implant. At that point the situation was clear to me and I decided that if I did not act immediately, he would disappear into the shadows and I would have no reasonable way to recover it.
I shot him and put him into crit. I then healed my friend before we were immediately ahelped and the situation was interrupted and i was banned without the admin allowing me to explain what led to that.
Reason the ban should be removed
My main concern is that this ruling punishes my retaliation while disregarding the more consequential griefing that caused the situation.
The surgeon took an item I had spent significant time, effort, and RNG obtaining, concealed the theft, denied having it, and then continued using it himself. That materially disrupted my round. I never ahelped about the surgeon for this, despite believing his behavior could reasonably have been considered griefing or selfantag. Instead, I chose to handle the situation using the RP tools available to me.
I believe that should be encouraged. If players ahelp every conflict the moment another character does something questionable, RP becomes sterile and every interaction is ultimately decided by an admin rather than the players involved. Natural conflict and player-driven consequences are a major part of what makes RP immersive.
My response was also extremely contained. I found the person I believed had robbed me of a valuable, lied to me, aimed to harm me through surgical malpractice and wasted much of my time. So I shot him, and put him into crit. I did not execute him, attack unrelated crew, loot him, or cause widespread disruption. He could be immediately revived and continue playing, while I would be arrested and face consequences for what I had done, further providing more RP content as I explained the situation to sec.
Because of everything above, I don’t believe this should be treated as me randomly choosing to selfantag or grief. The conflict was initiated by another character materially interfering with my gameplay, and I chose to resolve it through RP rather than immediately calling an admin.
I ask that the entire sequence be considered rather than evaluating my shooting in isolation. Banning the player who retaliated while ignoring the substantially more disruptive action that prompted the retaliation creates the opposite incentive from the one I believe good RP should encourage.
