First of all, thank you for your interest in applying to be a Goob Station admin! If you’re thinking of creating an application, you should read the entirety of this post to get a good understanding of what an admin’s general tasks are, what’s required of a player, what you may want to work on beforehand, the application process, and what to expect if you’re accepted.
Being an admin is more than just banning players and running events. Here are a few other things admins are expected to be able to do:
-
Enforce the rules
-
Follow the admin’s conduct
-
Maintain a professional attitude when dealing with players
-
Investigate player ahelps
-
Answer gameplay/mechanics questions from players
-
Interact with other admins on Discord
-
Handle ban appeals
-
Out-of-game rule enforcement, which includes things like replay/log reviews in response to player reports
These are just general admin tasks; sometimes we also do other things.
When we’re seeking new admins, we require that all applicants meet these requirements before applying:
-
You must be eighteen years of age or older.
-
Be fluent in English.
-
At a minimum, you must have at least 120 hrs of playtime on Goob Station servers.
-
You should be visible in the Goob Station Discord servers as well as in-game.
-
You must have good conduct in-game (e.g., no shittery).
-
You must not have been banned or role-banned in the last 2 months.
-
You must be in the Goob Station Discord server.
We often look for specific general qualifications. Having some or all of these does not guarantee that your application will be accepted; this is just a guideline.
-
You are active, with a minimum of 150 hours overall and regular playtime within the past month.
-
You have little to no negative admin remarks. A squeaky-clean record isn’t required, as we all make mistakes, but showing you can keep your notes to a minimum without issue proves to us you’re a good applicant.
-
You already understand the tools at an admin’s disposal.
-
You are likely to mesh well with the team. This doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything everyone on the team says, but you should be able to accept that you won’t always agree.
-
You can take criticism and learn from it. New admins learn a lot of things really fast, so mistakes are not uncommon!
-
You have good decision-making skills, you understand that not everything is black and white, and you can identify when to be strict in applying the rules and when to be lenient.
-
You can step away from SS14 when you need to; being an admin can be stressful and easily burn you out if you’re not careful!
Expectations of Accepted Applicants
Applicants who are accepted will go through a trial period that typically lasts 1 to 2 months. During this period, you must be active enough during your trial period that your performance can be evaluated. If your application is accepted, maintaining the activity level that you indicated on your application should be sufficient.
The activity level you indicate on your application should be something you expect to be able to maintain long term, even after your trial period. Still, it should not be seen as the minimum amount of time you are required to be active. It is not unusual for admins to occasionally take week-long or multi-week breaks. It is also not uncommon for trial admins to take week-long breaks, though doing so will typically delay the end of their trial.
Extreme levels of activity will not necessarily improve the chances of passing the trial phase, nor will they necessarily speed up the trial process. Trial admins are discouraged from being more active during their trial period than they can sustain indefinitely. They are cautioned that it is very common for them to believe they can maintain a much higher level of activity than they actually can, which can lead to burnout and a significant drop in overall activity.
Ask questions, get help when needed, and remember that if you cannot continue your trial phase, you’re free to leave and reapply another time!
