How Can YOU be a Writer For Goob Station

First of all, thank you for your interest in applying to be a part of the Goob Station writing team! If you’re thinking of creating an application, you should read the entirety of this post to get a good understanding of what a writing staff’s general tasks are, what’s required of a player, what you may want to work on beforehand, the application process, and what to expect if you’re accepted.

Being a part of our writing team means you take on some tasks to help keep Goob Station up to date and good-looking when it comes to text, like:

  • Updating the guidebook’s many different sections

  • Ensuring text is clean of issues with grammar and readability

  • Helping with writing new guidebook entries

  • Documentation for developers

  • Wiki work (if it ever comes back).

These are just main points; sometimes we also do other things.

When we’re seeking new members for our writing team, we require that all applicants meet these requirements before applying:

  • You must be eighteen years of age or older.

  • Be fluent in English.

  • At a minimum, you must have at least 60 hrs of playtime on Goob Station servers.

  • You should be visible in the Goob Station Discord servers as well as in-game.

  • You must have good conduct in-game (e.g., no shittery).

  • You must not have been banned or role-banned in the last 2 months.

  • You must be in the Goob Station Discord server.

We often look for specific general qualifications. Having some or all of these does not guarantee that your application will be accepted; this is just a guideline that may boost your chances when met.

  • You are active, with at least 150 hours overall and regular playtime in the past month, and have a noticeable amount of activity in the Goob Station Discord server.

  • You have little to no negative admin remarks. A squeaky-clean record isn’t required, as we all make mistakes, but showing you can keep your notes to a minimum without issue proves to us you’re a good applicant.

  • You know how to use IDEs, GitHub, and create pull requests

  • You know basic XAML and Markdown

  • Knowing how to use Google Docs or other popular writing sites or apps is helpful when collaborating.

  • You are likely to mesh well with the team. This doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything everyone on the team says, but you should be able to accept that you won’t always agree.

  • You can take criticism and learn from it. New staff learn a lot of things really fast, so mistakes are not uncommon!

  • You have good decision-making skills; you understand that not everything is black and white, and you can identify when to be strict in applying the rules and when to be lenient.

  • You can step away from SS14 when you need to; working so much can be stressful and easily burn you out if you’re not careful!

Expectations of Accepted Applicants

Applicants who are accepted do not go through a trial phase like game admins, as you’re just helping with writing. Still, it is expected of you to actively participate in any writing projects or simply update text that may look wrong. You’re not expected to throw your life away just to write 1000 paragraphs for what the passenger can do. Just join up and do what you can!

If you ever need to take a break or want to end your time on the team, just let your lead writer know. We appreciate anyone who wants to help, even if it’s only temporarily. You can also contribute changes on your own time without being on the team. Just make pull requests, let writers know about issues, or create your own edits in public pages.
