I wonder why goob mrp and lrp have such a large disconect both in player base and play styles

like truly why such a massive differences, i try and play lrp after maining mrp for so long and i am mete with such a large culture shock at how different lrp is, it feels like i just wondered into a zoo everything is so chaotic the only times people come and talk to you is they want something form you or to make an ass out of your species

(got killed by sec for being an ipc)

also sec plays more for the functionality or to win then, following sop, or contently breaking metashildeing and saying stuff they should not know IC or shouting shit they should never know about like shouting the spells for wizards fire ball or mantis grasp over comms

yet when i play mrp every one is so relaxed or hardly know how to react to anything evil all most like they are all just commoners not knowing how to fight with they most barebone’s of gear or sec is just brutally under skilled or hardly knows sop and they do infact follow metashielding but never break it and end up acting clueless when they should beging to act and when they do it’s all to late

yet lrp is a chaotic sympathy where every one is trying to get the upper hand at every thing all most crawling on top of each other fighting for peace’s of gear to win…
or leaping at the first excuse they have to kill some one who might be an “antag” and sec jumping to lethal’s or arming early against a threat to kill it first seeking all the glory to clame

yet mrp are like children they talk and chat with you ask how your day is, yet can hardly fight back, atleast competently they often feel like a push over, yet they do show a bit of honor just a bit

and lrp always talks of mrp as weaker that their better then them
mrp rarely speaks of lrp more of a savage brutal in nature

often lrp feels like a gmod sandbox, and mabye the players just like it this way, mrp feels more like a professional game or mafia or werewolf

For a long time they were on different codebases with some different content, there’s also in general different cultures based on how they play. LRP is a lot faster paced and a lot less talk with more action, MRP you are expected to talk more, roleplay more, and escalate more to do anything. The shifts are longer and calmer because of it. In addition having different dedicated playerbases for both of them, with a lot more of “sweaty” players going to LRP and MRP attracting people who don’t really vibe with that as much.

I’ve noticed that even across servers under the same host in SS13, there can be significant differences in the level of chaos and destruction that emerge during a round depending on RP level. In LRP environments, there are generally more interactions and less resistance to negative interactions (interactions that result in one or more players getting hurt).

Because of this, LRP can naturally drift toward frequent combat if the there isn’t content to counterbalance it. Although, roleplay still exists in LRP, but it often requires us to actively create it or seek it out rather than expecting it to arise organically.

As with most role-playing games, there’s a balance between “playing to win” and “playing to have fun.” For some players, winning is how they have fun and in this case you get the higher levels of combat. While others enjoy the chaos its self as it unfolds, and even then some prefer the job-simulator or routine aspects of the game.

LRP greenshift probably would be what you’re looking for in terms of roleplay and gameplay experience.

This may be a controversial take but I think the game mode shouldn’t be able to be voted upon. I get that people enjoy the Chaos but having it be completely random and making it to where admins cant redeem tokens during a green shift would probably help balance out the gameplay. Maybe also implementing non-antagonist shift events such as the “Heart Attack”, “Appendicitis”, “Kudzu”, and “Radiation Storm” to name a few may also help.

This has been a thing ever since Space Station 13. What you’ve encountered is the “chill” kind of LRP. It’s pretty chaotic, but people generally uphold the rules. In SS13, there were servers which literally attracted fascists and similar extremists and there were literally no rules at all. You spawned as a non-antag Assistant and got bored? You could absolutely go and try kill Captain. Oh but too bad, HoP was faster and executed Cap, took his stuff and dropped several n-words along the way. He then proceeded to give AA to everyone while trying to get every character with a skin tone too dark to be executed on spot. Goob LRP is not perfect but its generally fine to play. You will find plenty of chill people if you look well enough, people who will happily accept your invitation for some drink and bar roleplay. Murderboners are kinda rare too so if you avoid high-conflict roles and antags, you’re good for the most part. And if you avoid maints. And people with manifestos.

I really need to try more servers out, Im happy here and dont plan to leave, but I need more of a control study if you will.

I spent the majority on my SS time on SS13s Goonstation and loved it. Cosmetic rewards for achievements, Science department was a blast, and the sprite work? Chefs kiss.

The biggest culture shock for me, is Goobs MRP. It really feels like LRP at times, at least from what I’m used to.

Im used to one or two syndies spawning for a shift, and it being VERY common to see events like an MD(CMO) slowly breaking down over a shift before snapping and bombing a department that slighted them. Or having the HOP kidnapped and bodyparts shipped to the Bridge in an elaborate hostage negotiation.

The theatrics made it really fun, and even when security dropped the ball, you didnt care because it added tension and made it more exciting.

I hope Goobs gets a chance to develop more, I really love the SoP system and the concept of an NTR is cool as shit to me. I feel Goob has the best system in place for RP, but I personally feel like the saturation of antags is hindering it.

To defend security a bit, and tie in my point, training is nearly non-existent in all departments. Ive tried all of them out, and science is the only one that Ive consistently gotten training in, with engineering being the absolute worst.

Security feels under trained because they are, its hard to take time with assistants when you have three emergencies at the same time, and an assistant who cant use a flash yet. The SoP is in even worse shape, most wardens and HoS’s I’ve seen Ive not seen issues with, but the sheer amount of times a security officer ignores them or blatantly violates the SoP is insane.

I almost feel like you should pass a test to be allowed to be an officer and keep assistant open till you do, but idk, I’m just yammering. Security is very much in a state of “figure it out”

Hell Ive played HoS twice by accidental roll, and my second was alot better than my first, but I’ll openly admit Im not ready for it and want to spend more time in sec before I’m comfortable with it

I think part of this comes from the fact that there aren’t any true HRP “mainline” servers in SS14 right now where roleplay is actively and consistently policed. In my experience it’s a huge amount to ask of admins to constantly monitor chat, player actions, and escalation across an entire shift. Because of that, RP enforcement tends to be lighter and more reactive, which can make even MRP feel closer to LRP, and At times it ends up feeling closer to Chatroom with layered gameplay on top.

I also think part of the comparison comes from the “Relative” age gap, (Not the actual age of the players but the amount of experience the players have) between the two games themselves. SS13 has been around for nearly three decades, while SS14 has been in open beta for about six years.

On SS13, it wasn’t unusual to run into players with ten or more years of experience who had deeply internalized escalation, pacing, and roleplay norms. In SS14, the player environment is still comparatively young as many players are learning those expectations for the first time, or are bringing in habits from faster-paced or less RP-focused games.

For a lot of players this is their first time playing a game like SS.
