In-game Username: NigelSugar
Discord Username: bircurl
Characters you play: Nigel Sugar
On average, how many hours do you expect to admin per week: No less than 10, no more than 30.
How old are you? 22
Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Goob Station servers, or any SS13 experience? Yes. Started playing '13 in 2022. '14 in 2023.
Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)?
Yes!!!
- Head Admin for Goobstation , 7mnths. Each 2mnths election held for re-election. Stepped down from position early. During this, I helped rewrite the banning policy & admin policy under Tikibomb.
- Admin for Goobstation for a combined year.
- Current Head Admin for Monolith of 3 months; I assure you this won’t impede my activity in either server as a potential administrator of Goobstation.
- Current admin of monolith for about 7-8 months. I forgot exact time.
- Ratbite Admin for 7+ months, although I am rarely active there; so I doubt you can call it an ‘administrative’ role and more as an ‘advisor’ role. I sometimes help write policies & banning procedures.
- Ex admin for Traumastation, but wasn’t during the “24/7” period. So I don’t count it.
- Discord Head Admin during hullrot’s implosion of 15 minutes, more of a “meme” role but it counts in my books.
Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers?
Yes.
Delta-V, Wizden, RMC, Beestation, Goonstation, Fulpstation, TG, CM13, Some ERP server I forgot the name of, Splurt, and I think 2 or 3 more ss13 servers.
Detailed Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
I think game admins serve the role of Community Entertainers & “Police”.
Game admins are here to entertain those who follow the rules; via events, admemes, slight CC announcements that give the round spice or flavor, faxes back to the NTR.
But, they’re also here to serve as a “police” role: Punishing those who break the rules, ICly or OOCly.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
Although I have retired twice; and the most recent retirement being somewhat controversial in my opinion. I have refound my love for goobstation.
I would like to be an admin on during late times when others may not be, due to my nocturnal-like sleep schedule.
Allowing others to have fun on goob without the worry of being game-ended by a raider or someone with bad intentions is something I would love to experience being in contorl of.
What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin?
IC punishments over OOC punishments, Banning/noting, basic administrative duties.
Minor admemes that add flavor to the round, such as making a ghost visible to players because it’ll just be fun.
What are you least interested in doing as an admin?
“Major” or Big events. Puts a lot of stress on me personally and I don’t like the idea of ruining a lot of players rounds if I mess up a detail in an event. Although I won’t fully avoid events, it’s something i’d be afraid of doing often.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
Its fine. From what I’ve experienced on LRP. Its not total NRP, its not total LRP. It’s balanced almost. In a good way.
On MRP, it is fine.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
Maintaining a good relationship with the community and being intelligent.
If you are a shitter, barely playing by the rules you enforce, nobody will like you or the server.
If you are someone who is not open minded, nobody will like you or the server.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
Yes, earlier today Yubs spawned a floating no-clipping entity that just floated around the station. Was nice to see people get confused and was kind of funny.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so, what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
I cannot remember any recent incidents worthy of mentioning here that do not cause drama.
Although, based off of previous experiences, I would be serious when serious topics are involved, extracting myself from the conversation if it is something I am not knowledgeable enough on to comment on or if it is something that could slander a person’s reputation.
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
Multiple ways to go about this. Here’s just a few ideas I have in my mind instantly
Ask the NTR if they want players at CC to respond to faxes, instead of admins. If yes, force the ghosts into faxxing roles if they’re willing to.
Make the stools in the bar sentient
Spawn a few mothroaches in maints
Make some clothing sentient
Goof with the crew, like bolting doors infront of them when they’re not doing anything of importance or breaking lights around them.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
- Why has the HOS couped ? Is it within the rules?
If so: The HoS has done nothing wrong; if it’s in the best interest of the station, and follows escalation, the HoS is fine. So is the HoP, I think assisting in a valid coup is fine, especially if you’re the next in the chain of command, as the captain will have the nuke disk & other items exclusive to them. It’s best for the HoP to have it instantly other than the sec-off, then the warden, then the hos, then the HoP now acting captain. Just complicates things. I don’t think it falls under vigilantism, in my interpretation, as it has the best interest of the station at heart and is within every other rule.
The QM is also fine; I think it also adds to the vibe of the situation. As an administrator, I do not want to force players to play within my vision. The QM can have a specific reason such as “I did not believe the HoS!” or honestly just “I wanted to add to the RP!” would suffice: it adds Soul to the game. Vibes.
Although the Clown is the only rulebreaker in this hypothetical. Why did they steal the saber, There’s really no reason to. Would they plan to kill the captain? That’s a rulebreak in my books: Security is already chasing after the captain, as the HoS is the one leading the coup. I assume it’d be with non-lethals, something the clown didn’t steal. It’s clearly self-antag but minor enough to where I think IC punishment would suffice.
- If the coup isn’t valid
The HoS will be banned, simple as. I think doing IC punishment for a coup just makes things awkward and carries no logical explanation. “Oh, yea. I was just leading a coup. But now I’ve stopped suddenly, after getting chewed out by a CCO.” Doesn’t make much sense, and it also disrupts the round heavily for multiple people in command, security, and even the crew. (See: hiding in cargo shuttle, that disrupts cargo). The HoP won’t be punished, similar for reasons on why the QM wasn’t punished. I’m not looking to enforce my playstyle, or the ideal playstyle, on every player. That just breeds an oppressive culture where everyone is afraid to do what they want to do incase they get banned.
The QM won’t be punished. The coup is invalid, they’re defending the captain from an invalid coup.
The clown will have the same outcome as above, I shall copy & paste here: Why did they steal the saber, There’s really no reason to.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
I don’t care if a headmin isn’t available: That technically means that the Head of Staff is available, so I’d either @ them asking for feedback & guidance, as they “outrank” everyone in this situation.
If that was not your intended response to this question; I would @staff and ask for everyones opinions, explaining I’ve gotten conflicting punishment suggestions for this. I’d punish in between the suggested punishments if they’re varied.
Another look on this is that the banning policy is still an option; Of course, I’d first refer to the banning policy. And tell the admins included that I referred to the Banning Policy.
Scenario 4
A brand new player has joined, chosen cargo tech, and instantly rushes to get satchel charges and other salvage gear. How do you act, if at all?
Watch closely. Prepare ban panel with “raider” pre-written & the erase person mode enabled, if they toggle grenades then just instantly ban.
Thankfully; satchel charges are not that harmful so the damage can be fixed easily.
If they do not arm the charges, then I’d just ahelp them shortly after asking what they’re doing. Since it seems like role abandonment.
Scenario 5
A security officer, on code blue, spots a mime breaking into EVA, in response, he shoots the mime with lethal force then takes him to medical, in cuffs. How do you act, if at all, and to whom?
Mime is doing something that requires IC intervention, not OOC. I don’t care about vandalism and trespassing usually as an admin, only in rare cases where it becomes serious self-antag.
The security officer clearly broke Escalation. It’s blue, so they’re allowed armory weapons. But the SOP specifically states, “Security Officers must prioritize non-lethal takedowns unless the suspect/wanted personnel is hostile and/or continuously evading arrest (over extended periods of time)”
Of course, this means if the Mime was already wanted, evading arrest, i’d say… About 3+ times, I’d consider lethals to be valid. Same if the mime were hostile once, lethals would be valid. Although if they were not evading arrest or hostile, it would, once again, be overescalation and the security officer would have to be noted/banned.
The mime has already been arrested – it’d be quite awkward to aheal the mime, and send them back to the EVA to allow them to continue breaking the window. And it’d also just be scummy. Plus, the rules do state “sometimes you lose”, losing in this case being a less than 10 minute brig sentence.
Scenario 6
A chief engineer has been slacking all round, generally ignoring the responsibilities of the department, despite meteors and gas leaks happening all round. How do you act towards them, if at all?
- Has he delegated, or made an attempt to? If yes;
Then I’d ask him if he was told that the issues were resolved. If no, I’d tell him to go fix it. He’s still responsible of doing a role in his department if delegation is not successful. If yes, and the areas are still broken, I’d consider it an IC issue. It’s not his fault unless he was told afterwards that the areas are still broken, even after being told they’re fixed, by someone in power (command, sec, or someone else in the department that isnt equipped to fix the problem). In that case, i’d once again consider it role abandonment.
- Has he delegated, or made an attempt to? If no;
Tell him to either delegate or do it himself; then refer to #1 if future situations arise.
Scenario 7
You are adminning with 2 other admins, and recieve an aHelp, you start handling it when one of the others butts in to the aHelp correct you. How do you act, if at all?
Turn on admin only. Ask them to request permission before joining an ahelp next time, and ask them to backtrack simply by saying “Oh, sorry! Wrong ahelp” or something else to avoid embarrassment and/or shaming, this is if theyre wrong. If they’re not wrong, I’d exclude the backtracking part.
^ The above was edited because I read the question wrong while writing it. Whoops!
If they still continue afterwards; bring it up with a headmin in DMs. Dis-engage from the ahelp, tell them to handle it from there on.
Scenario 8
A passenger arrives on station and starts skulking around in maints. Not preparing weapons or breaking into places, but gathering tools, insulation gloves, wires, gas mask, batteries, etc. How do you act, if at all?
Regular passenger stuff.
Depends if they’re new. If they’re new, i’d watch them of course.
Other than that, I don’t think it’s worth anything actionable. Of course, security can deal with the insuls & tools part ICly. So I’ve no problem with it.
Scenario 9
You are playing as the HOS in-game when the only other admin online notifies you that they have to leave. Since you are an important figure, you decide to continue playing for the remainder of the round, going SSD when ahelps occur in order to deal with them. While playing, you arrest the clown for non-lethal assault against the HOP inside the medical bay. Just as you arrive at security with the clown in cuffs, you receive an ahelp from the CMO about their chemist blowing up chem. In order to investigate, you quickly hand the clown over to the warden and tell the warden to “deal with them.” While investigating the CMO’s ahelp, you then receive an ahelp about the warden beheading the cuffed clown. How do you act, if at all, and to whom?
- CMO Ahelp
I’m not involved with the chem explosion. Keep investigating. The chemist could’ve done it by accident, happens. IC punishment if thats the case, the IC punishment being their potential demotion, death, or just their death.
if intentional, self-antag, it ruined multiple peoples rounds (what if theres a mass-cas event) . I’d ban the chemist.
- Clown beatings
I’m involved with the ahelp. I was the one that gave the clown to the warden, if I continue with the ahelp, it’s breaking policy. If a headmin were available, i’d ask permission to null the policy. If not, I’d ask other staff to get on to deal with the ahelp.
Do you have any further notes or information we should know about you?
Dont think so. I carry some controversies behind me, but nearly all of them are false. I am welcoming of all communities & groups. I’d be willing to explain myself if required.
