Detailed Questions

What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?

I believe a Goob admin’s purpose is to either improve Roleplay or keep it refreshing in various ways, ensuring the environment they’re participating in meets standards and that rules are being followed. I do believe admins have monotonous tasks, such as processing
appeals and teaching new players, but doing these tasks ultimately means that the player base will be all the better for it, and allowing the regular players to trust in the system that they spend their time on.

Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?

Goob Station is my favorite server by far, and I want to help improve it and help people have fun in the same way that admins have helped me enjoy my time on it. I think that a big part of what makes me want to apply is the feeling that I’m atleast making the server more entertaining on a game that is ultimately the same gameplay loop over and over again. A big part of what can make a round interesting is admin intervention, or an admin nudging people to participate in great Role-play.

What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin?

I really enjoy teaching new players, especially people new to a department. I really like to see players approaching roleplay with a positive mindset. I like to spend time answering questions and generally observing players participating in good Role-play or causing good role-play to happen wether it be through an event or by actively taking part as a member of the Role-play. I like outcomes that don’t result in combat and all members being satisfied with the level of roleplay they took part in.

What are you least interested in doing as an admin?

I think I’d find it really annoying to have arguments with other admins. I want to make sure I’m well informed of the rules, and having disagreements with other admins would be so irritating. I also would not be looking forward to long, drawn-out arguments in ahelps. I believe players need to own up to mistakes. The worst thing I think a player can do after doing something wrong is try to avoid punishment.

How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?

I believe MRP is sustaining a good standard, and people respect each other. Problems stem from the long rounds, past the 1 hour 30, things start to derail and enter team deathmatch standards. I think it’s important to maintain a constant role-play standard to make sure all players are having fun. LRP is in a VERY LRP standard, it’s important to remember that the main mechanics of the game are centred around roleplay and that players are on a low roleplay standard server and not a NRP server, still doesn’t mean LRP doesn’t have good roleplay, I just see good roleplay less often whilst observing or participating.

Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?

I mentioned producing positive roleplay rather than waiting for it to happen already, but admins should work as standards even when they’re not in an Aghost. Admins can also play in a round and still act as a pillar to set roleplay standards, as they would know the rules better than anyone else.

Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?

Every round I see Rouge as cc official is always memorable in one way or another. I think CC is an awesome way of interacting with players in a non-invasive manner if need be. I can also remember many times the admins have stopped raiders. I think it was really reassuring to know that there’s always a third party to oversee actions. Boggle has also participated in many roleplay interactions, and it’s always nice to see them partaking in roleplay.

Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so, what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?

None that stands out immediately to me. The only thing worth mentioning is a time when an admin whose name I can’t remember didn’t intervene in a traitor going way past their objectives for the sake of going for kills, but they made up for it by pointing out that what they did wasn’t allowed.

Scenario Questions

Scenario 1

It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.

I normally have ghosts off to not clutter my screen, so my most immediate answer is to ignore them, after making sure there weren’t any new players looking clueless as it is round start I might If I were in the mood for it, take them to the admin arena and spend 5 minutes doing something non-invasive to the round so that they feel atleast partly satisfied.

Scenario 2

This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.

First action I’d do is to inform myself on the situation. I would only intervene if it’s specifically necessary, I’d Ahelp hos and ask them what led up to the coup to make sure it originates from a valid standpoint. It’s Lrp, but I’d still expect a real reason. I wouldn’t immediately take action on the clown and rather watch what they do after stealing captains sabre, if its obvious the clown is looking to bait the captain into engaging in a fight, I might intervene in an ahelp to remind them of the way they should be acting as a non-antagonist.

Scenario 3

You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.

I’d do a cross-comparison to the banning policy see if there are any similar cases or bans to the one I’m dealing with. I’d read into the fine print of the ban on the prior admin mentioned in the scenario. Once all of those options are used, I’d consider asking for help if the situation is complex enough. I want to make sure my ban is on par with the usual one to make sure the player is being treated equally. I might do this by asking any other admins in-game for help, or by pinging any admins that are online on Discord.

Scenario 4

A brand new player has joined, chosen cargo tech, and instantly rushes to get satchel charges and other salvage gear. How do you act, if at all?

I would make sure that they did it of their own volition and initially watch to see if the hop or qm, or any other command might have promoted them, then I’d certainly make sure that they’re aware that what they just did is very weird and on the side of power gaming. Only if all of those options are used would I start considering the idea of them being a raider, and keep a closer eye on them.

Scenario 5

A security officer, on code blue, spots a mime breaking into EVA, in response, he shoots the mime with lethal force then takes him to medical, in cuffs. How do you act, if at all, and to whom?

The officer would definitely be on the edge of rule-breaking; their excessive use of force would be alarming to me. But in this case, if the officer had asked the mime to stop and the mime refused or resisted, then it might have been enough reason to lead to lethal force. I’d only act if either party Ahelped asking for clarification on who was at fault. I would like to think that the officer might get reported to HOS, which may lead to good Roleplay. I wouldn’t get involved of my own volition if what led up to the scenario was valid.

Scenario 6

A chief engineer has been slacking all round, generally ignoring the responsibilities of the department, despite meteors and gas leaks happening all round. How do you act towards them, if at all?

I’d look at what they’re immediately doing. If what they’re doing is valid enough or more important than their duties, then I wouldn’t intervene. But if they’re completely ignoring their duties for a non-valid reason, I might be inclined to intervene in a very minor way, such as a small ahelp reminding them of what they’re supposed to be doing. I wouldn’t want to get involved if I’m not needed, so I might observe them closer to make sure they’re roleplaying and participating to the standard they’re supposed to.

Scenario 7

You are adminning with 2 other admins, and recieve an aHelp, you start handling it when one of the others butts in to the aHelp correct you. How do you act, if at all?

I’d go into the separate Ahelp chat with the admin who butted in, make sure we’re both on the same page, it’s important to me that all players are held to equal standards, no matter who they are, and so clarifying this issue with the other admin before taking further actions would be my priority then once we’ve both agreed on how we should approach this then I’d respond to the original ahelp. Also I would make sure we’re both citing the banning and rules policy to make sure we’re upholding the same standard.

Scenario 8

A passenger arrives on station and starts skulking around in maints. Not preparing weapons or breaking into places, but gathering tools, insulation gloves, wires, gas mask, batteries, etc. How do you act, if at all?

I might watch them for a little while, but their actions up til this point aren’t anything out of the ordinary. If they then do something alarming, then I might mention this fact. But I don’t see a reason to get involved in this situation yet.

Scenario 9

You are playing as the HOS in-game when the only other admin online notifies you that they have to leave. Since you are an important figure, you decide to continue playing for the remainder of the round, going SSD when ahelps occur in order to deal with them. While playing, you arrest the clown for non-lethal assault against the HOP inside the medical bay. Just as you arrive at security with the clown in cuffs, you receive an ahelp from the CMO about their chemist blowing up chem. In order to investigate, you quickly hand the clown over to the warden and tell the warden to “deal with them.” While investigating the CMO’s ahelp, you then receive an ahelp about the warden beheading the cuffed clown. How do you act, if at all, and to whom?

I’d initially wait until all combat is concluded; I wouldn’t want to interrupt their combat if it stemmed from a valid standpoint. The most immediate problem would be the decapitated clown. The clown is obviously alarmed by what the warden did, so I’d ahelp the warden to tell me what happened leading up to the decapitation. Based on that, I’d take action if the situation called for it, such as if ward with no prompting, attacked the clown, or it might be that the clown broke free and attacked the ward. I then would deal with the less emmidiate cmo situation, making sure it was all valid on their part, such as if the chemist made an honest mistake or if they were an antag and they had a plan.

Do you have any further notes or information we should know about you?

I do like to play a lot more on MRP than LRP, even though I do dabble with both. I enjoy the MRP environment just a little bit more, I’m not sure if it was worth mentioning.
