Detailed Questions

What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?

They make sure the player experience remains within the expected boundaries and improve upon it where they can. This could take the form of making sure the rules everyone agrees to are being followed or clearing up mid-round mechanical issues, among many other things.

Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?

I’ve been playing on Goob for basically my entire SS14 playtime. I want to make sure it’s running well and everyone is having a good time.

What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin?

Keeping track of, and taking care of, mid-round issues such as rule breaks.
Giving the expected communication with in-shift elements like command and the NTR.

What are you least interested in doing as an admin?

At time of writing, I can’t really name anything in particular. This isn’t a point I’m trying to make, but more me saying that the worst I can think of is still only mildly annoying, and literally nothing could be worse than the people I deal with at work.

How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?

The level of roleplay on Goob is less than ideal, in my opinion. It’s not catastrophically bad, and there are plenty who do fine, but there’s a notable focus on mechanics over roleplay for most people.

Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?

Teaching said problematic players if they’re willing to learn, especially if they’re new-ish. Leaving constructive commentary on any notes that have to be levied, or outright explaining in the relevant Ahelp.

Unrelated to rule breaks; helping new players become acclimated to Goob specific systems or roles. Correcting mid-round issues in an immersive or player-inclusive way.

Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?

Most of my admin interactions have been good ones, though they aren’t typically very long. Among those, most tend to be with Boggle specifically, if only because we have similar schedules. I’ve occasionally participated in admin events on the side of the event as an extra or facilitator.

Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so, what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?

The only admin interaction that’s even close to negative are the two times that I’ve been a little too good at countering Snoop’s lone ops in some late night rounds, which were mostly me getting Ahelped about how I did so.

Scenario Questions

Scenario 1

It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.

Casual player input in admin intervention is almost always a no-go. I wouldn’t rule out intervention in this case, but it would be because of something other than the instigators, such as some of the traitors leaving the round or dying early and leaving the antag situation other than what was expected.

Scenario 2

This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.

It would depend entirely on the “why” for each person. If the HOS is inciting a coup for a reason outside of SOP/law/rule breaks, or something else that would justify it, they need to be reprimanded in some form or fashion, but it could very well be handled by the players if, say, the NTR sent a report about the situation. It could still be worth an Ahelp and admin action depending on the severity.

The HOP should not be arming in any scenario unless their own life is actively under threat. Their agreeing with the HOS is a non-issue, but arming themselves is well outside their expected role. This, again, could be handled by the players, but it is still worth an Ahelp.

The captain and quartermaster don’t seem to be doing anything wrong in this case, unless the captain has done something wrong to instigate the coup and it’s something an admin needs to weigh on.

The clown is a blatant self-antag unless the captain tried to kill them, which could be part of the earlier problem. If it isn’t, then it’s just outright self-antag and needs to be treated as such by levying the appropriate note/ban.

Scenario 3

You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.

If I am confident that the original admin’s judgement is appropriate in this case, I’d go with the temporary ban. As far as I am aware, Ahelps are supposed to be handled by the admin who originally opened or responded, so my own decision on the matter is priority unless a headmin weighs in on it at the time. If I looked at all the relevant information and came to the decision that it deserved a permanent ban, which isn’t very likely with no prior notes or bans, then I would do that so long as it coincided with the existing punishment severity precedent, which is documented already.

Scenario 4

A brand new player has joined, chosen cargo tech, and instantly rushes to get satchel charges and other salvage gear. How do you act, if at all?

I wouldn’t act immediately, but I’d keep an eye on it. If other players get around to resolving the issue appropriately, whether that’s by alerting security or getting the quartermaster to intervene, then it’s fine as-is and may be a fine learning moment. If they take all that equipment and run off to do something blatantly against the rules, then it may well be a raider or something similar; I’d treat it as such and intervene.

Scenario 5

A security officer, on code blue, spots a mime breaking into EVA, in response, he shoots the mime with lethal force then takes him to medical, in cuffs. How do you act, if at all, and to whom?

The security officer would need at least a note for over-escalation. The mime was doing something wrong, but in such a way that it doesn’t warrant admin intervention. All this being said, if the mime is a known antag that warrants lethal force, such as a changeling, then I do nothing.

Scenario 6

A chief engineer has been slacking all round, generally ignoring the responsibilities of the department, despite meteors and gas leaks happening all round. How do you act towards them, if at all?

If it is just outright slacking, then that’s role abandonment and/or command incompetence. If they’re doing something else that actually requires their attention but isn’t necessarily within the scope of their responsibility, then they may just need to be warned.

Scenario 7

You are adminning with 2 other admins, and recieve an aHelp, you start handling it when one of the others butts in to the aHelp correct you. How do you act, if at all?

As I stated earlier, as far as I am aware, the admin who first acts on an Ahelp is the one who maintains responsibility for it unless a headmin has a reason to butt in on it. I would accept advice on the situation, but ask the second admin to let me handle it since I’ve already started.

Scenario 8

A passenger arrives on station and starts skulking around in maints. Not preparing weapons or breaking into places, but gathering tools, insulation gloves, wires, gas mask, batteries, etc. How do you act, if at all?

This is typical behavior for roles without responsibilities and doesn’t warrant admin interaction unless they do something else with that gear that would. Handling minor contraband like insuls is the job of security, and even then they don’t often care.

Scenario 9

You are playing as the HOS in-game when the only other admin online notifies you that they have to leave. Since you are an important figure, you decide to continue playing for the remainder of the round, going SSD when ahelps occur in order to deal with them. While playing, you arrest the clown for non-lethal assault against the HOP inside the medical bay. Just as you arrive at security with the clown in cuffs, you receive an ahelp from the CMO about their chemist blowing up chem. In order to investigate, you quickly hand the clown over to the warden and tell the warden to “deal with them.” While investigating the CMO’s ahelp, you then receive an ahelp about the warden beheading the cuffed clown. How do you act, if at all, and to whom?

The chemist situation would require elaboration. Chemists even explode their department on accident sometimes, so that would go on the back burner.

The clown situation is a whole bundle of issues, some of which would require an outright ban depending on the reasoning, this is why I would prioritize it over the chemist Ahelp. The warden would need to explain the why of that execution immediately. If the captain okayed it, then it expands the scope of the issue to the captain. If the clown somehow did something in the meantime that warranted an execution, that would also need to be investigated. At the very bare minimum, the warden likely needs a note/ban for over-escalation. The captain, if they okayed it, they may need a command incompetence note/ban. If the clown SOMEHOW did something that necessitated an execution while cuffed, which is hilariously unlikely, then it may be that no one needs any correctional action.

Returning to the chemist Ahelp, if the issue did warrant action upon further elaboration, such as self-antag behavior, then I would proceed to see to that with the appropriate action, likely a warning depending on past behavior.

Do you have any further notes or information we should know about you?

I’ve been rejected for trialmin before, and don’t particularly mind it. I would like to know why if I’m rejected again. If it’s something I can correct or work on, it would be nice to know for next time.

We ask that applicants are in the Goob Station main Discord server and active within it. I don’t see you anywhere on there. Are you sure that you put the right username?

Kinda disregard the above. I’m an idiot.

Though, it is recommended you start getting active when possible.

I recently talked to Boggle about this. I swapped the discord I used in the server. I used to be on Invidia5559 and have been in the discord for awhile. The swap was for reasons unrelated to the server, and I’ll elaborate privately if necessary. I left the discord on that other account to avoid future confusion.
